Sam was a nice guy with a lot of spirit as I remember and I hope he enjoys his new life.

What can I say about Sam?  He was certainly not everyones "cup of tea".  He could be sweet and caring and then obnoisious and sour.  He could be briliant acedemically and attended MIT for several years until his ghosts drove him away.  He worked for many years with the developmentally disabled having a compasion for this group that he did not seem to have for many others..

He stayed with me and my family for a summer in the mid 2000s.  By then his mental chanlenges were becoming evident.  We tried to get him help but he denied needing it and eventually disappeared one mornig without a trace.

He died in 2019 in I believe in Alabama.  He had a daughter though they were estranged.  I believe he died of colorectal cancer..

All I can say at this point is he was a good friend to me and if you can get into mischief in heaven he will find a way.

Bur, you are spot on about Sam and I am sorry to hear he had a troubled life.

Without Sam, our Boy Scout troop and our Sunday afternoon Patrol meetings at Jimmy Williams house would have been pretty boring!  When Sam got a great idea about a project we could do, he would sort of bounce up and down with excitement as he explained it.

One could always count on Sam to have some perspective that was totally different than the rest of us.  And that is what I loved about him - he never held back an opinion or idea.  There wasn't much filter with Sam.

He and I went through the Order of the Arrow at the same time and what a huge challenge it must have been for him to stay silent for 24 hours!

I can still see him in the woods, about 50 yards away, getting out of his sleeping bag with his mop of curly black hair and his black glasses askew.

I really liked his Mom and I remember being over at his house and thinking about her patience and how well she could handle Sam's ups and downs.

You are wonderful to have given him a safe place to stay that summer.  A true friend!
